My short story 2011
My story is about a boy named Randy. He lived in Philadelphia all his life. Born and raised in Philly, he is used to everything there. He had his life planned out for him from the beginning. His parents and older sister love him a lot, Randy feels smothered by his family though. He keeps everything to himself and that’s how he thinks it should be. He is a sophomore now and feels the need to join a sport and be less anti-social, but shortly after he joins track which feels like the best the decision he made since he came to high school, he starts to have vivid nightmares and what he then finds out is sleep insomnia and doesn’t feel the need to tell a teacher or his parents because they will worry about him and then force him to quit track, which is the one thing he truly loves. Randy has come to a point in life where he has to choose between his love for running and track or finally be relieved of these terribly vivid nightmares and sleep insomnia. He comes to a conclusion that tracks means too much to let go. He thinks it’s just nightmares and endless nights of no sleep are a result of working hard. Is it more than that though? Is he risking his sleep for a sport he just joined? Is it worth it? Randy battles with his thoughts to tell his family about his issues. Even though he has maintained his 3.5 G.P.A. he is conflicted about confiding in anyone to trust to let out his mixed emotions and his secret insomnia.
